Seven Integrated Power Meters in one!

  • Two channels with "net" metering capabilities for renewable energy installations.
  • Five AUX channels capable monitoring any 120V or 240V load.
  • LOAD GROUPING: group a number of circuit breaker circuits together on one channel (up to 80 Amps total)
  • Various communication options including "Ethernet" or "Wireless Ethernet" using Brultech's EtherBee™ adaptor.
  • Data over internet available through our partnered web service company.
  • Aux 5 channel may be used for counting pulses or reading DC voltage from various environmental sensors.
  • All seven channels monitor TRUE power!

Do you Need More Channels?

No Problem!

  • The EtherBee™ gateway allows data collection from multiple ECM-1240 or ECM-1220 wireless enabled units.
  • A multiple RS-232 solution is also under works for multi-unit monitoring.

(The ECM-1220 must have ver2 or ver3 XBee radio.)

It has never been so easy to dissect your electric bill !

More Features....

  • AUX5 has the ability to:

    • measure energy consumption OR

    • measure DC voltage OR

    • count pulses from water or gas meter with pulse output

  • Data available via XBee module and RS-232 simultaneously (if equipped with wireless option).

  • Firmware upgradeable.

  • User programmable packet send from 1 to 255 sec between packet sends

  • Triggered packet send options. Send data immediately when a power change occurs.

  • Send data directly to an internet data hosting service:

We have partnered with www.check-it.ca, an online data monitoring company to provide "real-time" tracking of the connected loads. Historical data is also available...... see what loads were "on" while you were away or when you are away.

How does the system work?

The ECM-1240 is installed just outside of the panel.

Sensors are installed in the service panel. The sensor leads exit the service panel through an appropriate box connector or strain relief. The sensor leads connect to the ECM-1240.

The ECM-1240's wall transformer plugs into a local outlet. This provides the line voltage reference for true power metering.

The ECM-1240's data then gets forwarded in real-time to a computer or a server.

CAUTION!

The ECM-1240 installation requires having current transformers (CT) installed inside the electrical service panel. This portion of the installation MUST be performed by a qualified electrician or individual. The installer must follow all local safety codes and use proper safety practices and equipment.

Never install the ECM-1240 Unit inside a live service panel.

What communication options are available?

Every ECM-1240 come equipped with an RS-232 data port. Data from the RS-232 port may be connected to a computer by:

  • connecting directly to the computer's RS-232 port.

  • using a serial to USB adaptor

  • using our EtherPort adaptor to access the data over a LAN

Alternately, the ECM-1240 may communicate wirelessly when equipped with the optional XBee® radio. The wireless communication options include:

  • using the optional USB dongle to communicate wirelessly directly to a computer

  • using Brultech's EtherBee adaptor to make the data available over ethernet.

The EtherBee option is highly recommended for those planning future expansion. It is capable of listening to more than one ECM-1240 at a time. It can also listen to an ECM-1220 and ECM-1240 (providing they both have the wireless option installed).

If the ECM-1240 is equipped with the wireless radio, it is capable of communicating via RS-232 and XBee® at the same time.

The installed XBee® radio uses Digi International's ZB firmware which uses ZigBee® protocol on a mesh network. www.digi.com

What software is available and what is the cost?

Software options are currently limited:

  1. We have available for download an "ECM Server" software application. It provides the following functions:

    • Establishes the communication link with the ECM-1240 using a choice of Serial Port or Ethernet communication.

    • Assembles incoming packets into usable packets

    • Provides API calls to retrieve any data variable

    • Has the ability to store the data to a local database while running in the background.

A special thanks to Bob Paauwe, for his development of this software.

  2. Send data directly to the "check-it.ca" web data hosting service. For more information contact www.check-it.ca

  3. It is expected that there will soon be plug-in developed for several home automation systems. The developers who have written the plug-in applications for the ECM-1220 have expressed interest in expanding their plug-in to include the new ECM-1240.

We are always happy to assist those interested in developing their own custom software. We also encourage developers to make their application available to Brultech's customers. We would gladly link to your site if you have companion software available for our products.

There is currently limited software support for the AUX5 DC or Counter functions.

Recommended Setup:

Since the ECM-1240 is designed to easily accommodate a 240V load on a single channel, we recommend using CH1 for the main panel service. This would represent the total power coming from (or going to, in the case of renewable energy systems) the electric company's grid. This requires two current transformers (CT) of the same amperage as that of the panel, typically 100A or 200A.

CH2 of the ECM-1240 may then be used for monitoring a secondary large load such as a sub-panel, solar inverter, A/C system, etc. Two SPLIT-60 or SPLIT-100 CTs are recommended, although it is possible to use Micro CTs (for smaller loads) with proper resistor attached.

The five AUX channels are geared towards monitoring panel circuits. They will handle a 240V load up to 40A (two MicroCTs required). The AUX channels also provide the option of grouping several 120V circuit breakers on one AUX channel. This requires a MicroCT for each breaker to be monitored.

Should more monitored channels be required, a second ECM-1240 may be added to the current system if communicating with an EtherBee adaptor. The secondary unit may be equipped with MicroCTs on all seven channels.

CAUTION

The ECM-1240 installation requires having current transformers (CT) installed inside the electrical service panel. This portion of the installation MUST be performed by a qualified electrician or individual. The installer must follow all local safety codes and use proper safety practices and equipment.

Never install the ECM-1240 Unit inside a live service panel.

Energy Monitoring SPLIT-CORE CTs are available in 60A, 100A and 200A capacity. Larger capacity CTs are available by special order. These are to be used with the monitor's CH1 or CH2. All of our SPLIT CTs are now UL/c listed.

Our "MICRO-CT" can connect to a panel circuit up to 40A. They take up a minimal amount of space in the panel. Although these are not "split-core" types, they are fairly easy to install. (must be installed by a qualified person or electrician)

The MICRO-CT is designed for use with Aux1 to AUX5 channels

Smaller Diameter than a Dime!

Slightly larger size CTs are also available for services using aluminum wiring.

The EtherBee adaptor's wireless communication is fully compatible with the "Digi®"  XBEE® modules. (digi.com)

The EtherBee comes programmed with Digi's "ZB" version of firmware (coordinator). This enables communication using the ZigBee® protocol.

ZNet-2.5 version of the Digi firmware is optionally available.
