The Red Arrows show how the energy travels from the "Power Company" to your appliances.

The ECM-1220.H Senses the Current and Voltage and calculates the energy data. This data is:

  • Displayed on its Bright LCD Display

  • Stored Internally for Later Retrieval

  • Made available to a computer via USB or Wireless (optional).

Basic explanation using simple terms:

In short, the ECM-1220.H monitors and records the amount of electrical energy used in your home.

The ECM-1220.H offers many features and techniques that will assist the consumer in reducing the amount of electricity used. It also provides means of reducing the electric bill by giving the consumer the ability to reduce the "time of use" (TOU) and "peak demand" penalties.

Studies show that savings of 10% to 15% are typical for those consumers using energy monitoring devices. This means the ECM-1220 will quickly pay for itself and reward you with the savings from then on. By managing peak electricity demands, the need for new power generating plants will be reduced.

Using the ECM-1220 in conjunction with the optional software you will be able to:

  • View the amount (KWh) and cost of energy used.

  • Display the average daily, weekly and monthly cost of energy.

  • Set and track a desired target electricity budget.

  • Determine the power required by individual appliances or loads by using a "tare power" method. There is no connection required to those loads.

  • Detect mysterious energy users that may cycle while you are away or sleeping.

  • Identify appliances or loads in need of repair or replacement.

  • In the future have the ability to send OFF commands to unimportant loads when approaching peak demand situations.

  • Record, chart and print the energy usage.

  • Export records to other applications such as spreadsheets.

  • Involve the entire family in attaining energy reduction goals. (Some customers have created family incentives, such as weekend vacation or new TV if a consumption goal is attained and maintained)

  • Assist in detecting a faulty house meter.

There are various types of monitors on the market today, however, we know of no other residential monitor providing the versatility of the ECM-1220.H. Beware of some brands of energy monitors! Some energy monitors claim to monitor the "electrical use" and are based solely on measuring electric current.

Your electrical company bill is based on something called "true power". This is NOT always proportional to the current use therefore using the wrong type of energy monitor will yield false information.

The ECM-1220 measures "true power" as does the electric company.

Recently, the ECM-1220.H has evolved providing even more features and options:

  1. Wireless connection to your computer

  2. Ability to monitor 120V/208V panel fed from a three phase source.

Technical explanation

The ECM-1220.H combines the sensed current from both phases of a 120V/240V service panel and using the sampled line voltage calculates the true power (watts) and energy consumption (kilowatt-hour). It also meters the current (Amps) and line voltage (Volts).

With recent changes to the firmware, the ECM-1220.H now has the ability to monitor a two phase 120V/208V panel fed from a three-phase service.

One of the many great features of the ECM-1220.H is that it is "Flash Upgradeable". What this means is that for those Brultech customers having purchased their ECM-1220.H prior to the avalability of some of these new features, they can simply download the latest firmware version (free of course) and re-program their monitor to include the new features.

The data measured by the ECM-1220.H forms the basis for a multitude of valuable data for tracking, analysing and budgeting the energy.

While monitoring a load, the ECM-1220.H:

  1. Displays the measured and calculated data.

  2. Stores the measured data to its data logger non-volatile memory.

  3. Makes the “real-time” data available to a computer via its USB interface or wirelessly (optional).

1. The ECM-1220.H displays the measured and calculated data:

The values listed in blue text below may be displayed separately for CH1, CH2 or CH1+CH2 by the ECM-1220.H

  • Power Watt

  • Kilowatt-Hour  KWh

  • Cost of Energy Consumed $

  • Projected KWh based on the user selected number of projected days.

  • Projected Cost ($) based on the user selected number of projected days.

  • Elapsed Monitoring Time  Days, Hours, Minutes, Seconds

  • Line Voltage Volts

  • Load Current Amps

  • Peak Power Watts

  • Rate of Use $/Hour

2. The ECM-1220.H stores the measured data to its data logger non-volatile memory:

The "Storage Interval" is user selected. This dictates how often the average of all samples are stored to the data logger memory. This memory is non-volatile and requires no batteries. The storage interval range is from 1 to 255 minutes. A lower storage interval will give better resolution but reduce the available recording time.

The standard ECM-1220.H unit comes with enough storage for 13,080 records. This is optionally expandable to 52,400 records.

The records consist of:

  • CH1 Power
  • CH2 Power
  • Line Voltage

The data is downloadable via USB port using the optional DL-1220 software. For the wireless models, download is done wirelessly.

 3. The ECM-1220.H makes the “real-time” data available to a computer via its USB interface or wirelessly (optional):

Real time data from the ECM-1220.H, when coupled with a computer, allows a multitude of features for assisting in:

  • Budgeting energy use.
  • Auditing individual loads.
  • Projecting daily, weekly, monthly consumption.
  • Detecting the onset of a "peak demand" situation, allowing manual or automatic load shedding (reduction), to avoid penalties $$$.
  • Detect unseen or unheard unnecessary loads.
  • Determine if some appliances require maintenance or replacing.
  • Provide an easy to understand computer screen allowing children to get involved in conservation.
  • ... more features coming soon!
