Help me finish my install

Post by scottmichaelj » Tue Dec 20, 2016 5:55 pm

So the guy whom I was working with over at the cabinet company left in Sept. Since then I been trying to work with a rep there who just cant think outside the box and she keeps telling me they cant do what the one guy proposed (and I posted). So for months I been calling people and having them come out and look at the space. Everyone I talked to either has to stay within their box, a couple handymen just want the most money with the least amount of work and basically say its "too custom" for them or price it WAY out of proportion so that I wont hire them or if I do they make more money than the space is worth.

I kept digging and digging and thinking, then rethinking. I finally found a company that can do LARGE sliding doors in various styles. This company can do large frosted glass sliding doors that are not opaque or "see through" which will be nice since there are windows in the garage and on the garage rollup door that I frosted with film. Then going into my server/workshop the french doors are frosted glass. Also the space by the panels happen to be 110" inches and so I can do 2 sliding doors 55" that will allow me full access to both panels nicely and I dont need to have a "busy" look with 5 cabinet doors showing and space to open the doors into the garage trying to avoid the car parked in front of the panels.

Heres a sample image. The frame comes in white, black, and nickle and they can do a side return to hide the left gap.

This is what the space looks like further back.

I am now waiting for a quote but it seems like it should be close in price as the other cabinet option. They also have a discount until the end of the year. I still will have to wait 8 weeks or so to get them, so looking at sometime in February 2017 for installation. Finally hoping to get this task off my to do list!

Thoughts? Opinions? Yes I know "glass" in a garage might not be the "BEST" solution but I don't use it as a typical garage per say. So my concern about them getting broke/shattered are not really a big deal. I also don't have kids which helps :D

So essentially your going to have a big ass closet in the garage? Also, I'm a little surprised any professional company would have a hard time with coming up with a basic push and slide concept?!?! :?

If I could come up with a stealth like push and slide solution I am sure those farmers out there could do better. I recall sending you a direct link to a few push and slide solutions don't know if you ever viewed them. But, as you probably know the hardware is the most expensive portion of the project besides what type of material to use.

For me it took me several months to finalize the idea, concept, to deployment.

The biggest challenge in this project was working with such huge panels with no assistance. Other considerations was ensuring the panels remained locked when needed. But also could be open with out thought - well besides showing someone the wall actually moved!

LOL . . .

The only thing I plan on adding to my push and slide wall is double panel 5/8" X-Rated drywall to protect all the components from a fire condition.

OCD - I thought all those cabinet doors would look a bit busy. The push systems were expensive and didnt really fit the project. Its "cheaper per say" to just have sliding doors since I don't need locking etc.

Issue was finding a custom installer or doors that were aprox 120" high and 55" wide for the electrical panel space.
