Mapping existing outlets to circuits

Hi all,
I'm just beginning my monitoring project.
I'm thinking my first step should be to make a map of my circuits in my home so I know what loads are on which circuits.
The only method I have to do this would be to turn off all circuits, then turn on one circuit only, walk about the house with a plug tester and see which plugs are live, then chart the results so I end up with a map of outlets and circuits.
I'm wondering if there are any steps I can take to make this go more easily and accurately and how other people have done this preparatory step.
