Communication Basics

The ECM-1240 monitors energy consumption and forwards this data to its destination via communication port.

All ECM-1240 devices have an RS-232 port for communication.

The ECM-1240 is optionally available with an internal wireless radio in addition to the default RS-232 port.

An ECM-1240 with the wireless option may use both communication ports at the same time. For instance, the wireless radio may send data to a computer at one location while the RS-232 can be connected to another PC.

Both ports (RS-232 and wireless) operate the same except for the following:

Only the RS-232 port may be used to upgrade the firmware via direct RS-232 connection or serial to USB adaptor.
Only the RS-232 port may be used to configure or reprogram the wireless radio via direct RS-232 connection or serial to USB adaptor.
